stop me right in my tracks

Dear You.

Today we share a favourite.

Adrianne - Storm

Adrianne is a very talented artist, and listening to her sing and play the guitar is a treat.  We love the smooth flow of her voice and the acoustic background.  This song is about opening up and putting yourself on the line and we know that's one of the hardest things to do, so we really admire Adrianne for this song.  The video is from her YouTube channel and explains why she wrote the song and introduces one of her background singers for it.  We hope you find a favourite in Adrianne today.

Sleeperstar - Texas Rain

This is one of the many bands following us on Twitter (you can follow too at songsfromustou) and upon checking them out, we knew they had to be featured.  His pure and captivating voice pulls you in right away and hold you until the end.
They have a really great contest going on where they are giving away a ton of great Apple prizes.  All you have to do is "like" them on facebook and suggest them to your friends! Then post on their wall to tell them how many friends you suggested them to.
You can find them here:

Trespassers William - Lie in the Sound

This favourite speaks for itself.  It is beautful, calm and haunting and we are so happy to have found it.  We know it will be a favourite forever.  Trespassers William are a band from Seattle, who got their name in a very unique place.  Their band was named from a Winnie the Pooh story about Piglet's grandfather.  We are sure not too many bands were named from such an infamous children's story, but we feel lucky to have found the one that was.  We hope Trespassers William becomes your favourite today.

Alain De Courtenay - Lesser Man

This artist is one we discovered a long time ago, and we have been in love with him ever since.  We encourage you to dim the lights and listen to the words that are being sung here, as they are some of the most touching lyrics that we have ever come across. Purchase his album (The Pregnant Letter) and you will not be disappointed.  We promise.

Strays Don't Sleep - For Blue Skies

Today our favourite feels very personal.  This song was written by one of the band member's whose brother was sentenced to 30 years in prison.  The emotional pull of separation and forgiveness engulf you throughout the entire piece.  We fell in love with the raw emotion behind Strays Don't Sleep's words, and we are so thankful they were willing to share this piece with the world.

Angus and Julia Stone - Mango Tree

Julia Stone was featured in our first post with William Fitzsimmons.  Today's favourite is a song by Julia and her brother Angus.  Australian born, this brother-sister duo was raised in a very musical family.  Originally they were each writing music separately but in 2006 decided to combine their talents.  The delicate harmonies and carrying acoustics make every song by them one we love.  We hope you find your own mango tree today.

The Head And The Heart - Lost In My Mind

Such a happy song! This band fancies us with tight trio harmonies accompanied by piano, bass, violin, and some percussion.  They self-released their first album in 2010 and we hope they plan on releasing another.  This band could be Seattle's next big group so we hope you jump on the band wagon and give this clearly talented group some of your attention. Make way for a happy song!

Warpaint - Baby

A friend of ours shared Warpaint with us, and we thought they were perfect for our favourite today.  A Los Angeles band, Warpaint has been nominated for BBC's Sound of 2011 poll.  Their sound is simple and honest and its light touch lets you get lost in it.  They've been compared to artists like Joni Mitchell and Gregory and the Hawk.  Today we hope our favourite becomes yours, because this one is a keeper!

Copeland - Love Affair

This band was originally started by Aaron Marsh and his best friend James Likeness and they have held our attention since debuting in 2001.  This band is involved with the To Write Love On Her Arms project that supports people who are dealing with depression, self-mutilation and thought of suicide.  They work to bridge the gap between traditional treatment and people who actually need help.  This track is a beautiful one.  The piano portion that supports his velvety voice will help you drift off to a care-free place.  We hope that you make this one a favourite too.

Guster - Rise and Shine

Where we are it's a rainy morning and this song is the perfect way to get the day off to a good start.  Guster is a band that was put together in 1992 but have kept recording with their most recent album being released just last year.  The original three members met in their first week of college and started a band they called Gus.  They made their name longer and welcomed a fourth member into the band who added a lot of instrumental talent to the already talented group of musicians!  This song may have just become our new early morning pick me up.  We hope it makes you feel a little lighter as you start off your day, wherever you might be!

Dear You.

Today is your lucky day, because today we share TWO favourites.
We have decided that we just chould not choose between the two.

Me Vs. Myself - Carefully

This band is unlike any other that we have featured.  But when we heard this track, we were instantly entranced.  Ready to share their music and passion with the world, they released their first EP "Seasons" and we are definitely looking forward to the next project they are working on. This group of four well-rounded musicians allowed us to appreciate a song in a genre that is not always of our first interest.  This demonstrates their ability to draw a wide crowd no matter the age group, preference, or stereotype.  Let Me Vs. Myself surprise you.

Beach House - Zebra

There is a romantic feeling that is wrapped up in this music.  Beach House's sound has been compared to the feeling one gets after having laid too long in the sun with a lover, without a hint of regret.  The band is often labeled as "dream pop" band due to their slow, atmospheric rhythms and haunting lyrics. I hope that you find them as dreamy as we do.

Kennigo - Down the Doorway

http://vimeo.com/19212496

Today we are sharing one of your favourites!  We listened, and we agree they are great!  Kennigo is a band from Brisbane, Australia.  The guitar in this song carries it from start to finish.  The vocals support the base guitar line perfectly, and the wave like progression keeps you listening from start to finish.  This is one song you will not get tired of hearing.  We hope Kennigo keeps producing songs so we can listen to them everyday.

Jonny Melo Band - Betterfly

This indie artist is both an incredibly talented guitarist and vocalist.  With each track, we fall deeper and deeper into his music.  He is from Ottawa in Canada and someone we look forward to hearing more of.  Although we can almost guarantee he's a new face to you, he's one we know that we'd like to keep around. His refreshing sound is just what we need after a long day. Indulge in his melodies.

The Weakerthans - Left and Leaving

This favourite is by a band we discovered from starting Songs From Us to You.  It had us hooked from the very first chord.  This band has a cool story behind them!  The band was formed in about 1997, and 10 years later produced their album The Reunion in a recording studio above an old factory in Winnipeg.  They originally were from Winnipeg and so it seemed appropriate.  They would arrive at the studio after the factory day was done and create songs and record throughout the night, finishing as the factory reopened in the morning.  We hope you are as captivated by The Weakerthan's sound as we are.

Robert Francis – Little Girl

For Robert Francis, music is more than making a living or finding an outlet to express his emotions. For him, he claims that music is his way of keeping from losing his mind. This song emerges from the emotional turmoil of a failed relationship. His lyrics are candid and transparent. The intimacy that you feel when listening to his music is something that cannot be fabricated. He is real. He is real with his music and his emotions are genuine and moving. We hope this sad (yet immensely beautiful) song speaks to you today.

Tyler Hilton featuring Kina Grannis - I Believe In You

Tyler Hilton, a California native, has a musical style that has been compared to that of Howie Day as well as Elton John.  His first album was released in 2004 and since then he has been asked to perform and act in various TV shows and movies.  Kina Grannis made her break into the music world during the SuperBowl XLII, after winning the Doritos "Crash the SuperBowl" contest.  Her first album was released in 2003, and since then she has continued releasing albums, the most recent in 2010.  The voices of these two individuals come together and make this song something to be admired.  We hope you admire it too.

This up and coming five-piece band from Australia, is one that will have you wishing they had more albums so there was more to listen to! This group has been big in Australia, New Zealand and the UK and is just starting to become more well known in North America. From listening to a few of their released tracks, we can already tell that his group is euphoric and has musical talent in high supply. We hope that means that there's more where this came from and they continue releasing tracks to win us over completely!

Wakey! Wakey! - Dance So Good

Wakey! Wakey! is a lucky find!  A four person band led by Mike Grubbs on piano and vocals from New York, Wakey! Wakey! is currently on an international tour.  This song tugs on your heart, allowing you to relate to the feelings Grubbs has experienced that inspired his song.  His piano skills are amazing, and the combination of the piano with his voice make this song one that you will not forget about.  It gets stuck in our heads all the time.  We hope you're humming it tomorrow!

Today we share a favourite.

Andy McKee - Ouray

As we are in the midst of exams, we thought we could share one of our favourite study group artists. It brings a great soothing feeling for work or play. Although it is an acoustic piece with no lyrics, his talent proves to be greater than many. He is currently on a world tour and is playing in some places he’s never ventured before (you can find dates on his homepage). Andy McKee is one of the finest acoustic guitarists that we’ve ever had the pleasure of studying to. Have a listen, fall in love.

when it's burnin' hot on summer days ... get some lemonAID

Dear You.
Today we share a favourite 48hr charity event and a song to go with it.
Passion – Lemonade
Although we don’t know much about the artist of this track, we do know a lot about the project we want to share.  The Richard Ivey School of Business located on the campus of the University of Western Ontario has started a 48hr blitz where they are trying to raise as much money as possible for the Boys and Girls Club of London.  The students have been separated into small groups of seven and given $50 to start off their fundraising project.  They only have forty eight hours to develop a creative method to raise money, attain all supplies, market their idea, and implement their ideas.  We know that we’ll be having at least two glasses of LemonAID to support this cause!  We hope that if you’re from London, you quench your thirst with a tall glass of lemonade from either campus or around the neighbouring cities ... they’re everywhere! Help the future business leaders of the world with their race against the clock and show them your lemon face!

Allred-Golden

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-gysvFHXLLk

This song has been a favourite for a very long time.  Listening to it never gets old.  Allred is a band of five started by songwriter John Allred of Hartford, Connecticut in 2002.  Their acoustic sound is the perfect Sunday afternoon listen.  The band has been influenced by a number of artists, and they have taken their influences and made something great.  Their newest album All We Are was released at the end of last year and is definitely worth picking up.  We love the feeling behind the music, and we really hope you do too.

Sneaker Pimps – 6 Underground
Sneaker Pimps took their name from an article written by the Beastie Boys about a man they hired to track down some classical sneakers.  But Sneaker Pimps is more than just a good story.  They are a group that formed in 1994 whose music is still being enjoyed to this day.  Their eerie sound draws you in and keeps you listening until the final decrescendo.   We hope this track, which made it to number nine on the UK charts, makes its way onto your songlist.
But today we share more than just a song.  We also share a project.
Bully Me
Emily Ferris, a University of Western Ontario student, is a girl you should keep an eye on.  She has the ability to capture the artistic essence of whatever she is pursuing and this is a skill and talent that is not easy  to come by.  We expect great things from her.  We share her project on body dysmorphia which also features the track 6 Underground.  We hope it amazes you too.

Research Material is a band from Los Angeles, California.  All of the members (Matt, Ryan, Fred and Adam) met at Boston's Emerson College where they were all in film school.  Research Material's music has been featured on a number of TV shows for different networks.  They will begin their first tour this year, and maybe if you're lucky you can go see them live! This Norwegian band first caught our attention with their song “Orange” when we stumbled upon it by accident on Youtube.  But "Bonzai Tree" on the other hand, while still centralizing the ukulele, is a little calmer and more reserved.  We promise that this catchy and lovable music will make an excellent addition to your iTunes. Gregory and the Hawk is in fact the solo endeavour of New York's Meredith Godreau.  Although Gregory and the Hawk has not produced any records at this point in time, they have a huge internet following and have promoted their music that way.  This song has an honesty to it not heard very often as do most Gregory and the Hawk songs.  We also recommend Like Daddy Like Daughter by the same artist (although all of their music is worth a listen)!

Basia Bulat – Heart Of My Own
This University of Western Ontario graduate was nominated for a Juno this year (a music award presented to Canadian artists) and she definitely deserves recognition as one of the best new artists the country has produced.  Her bubbly voice, backed by a loyal band, proves to be exactly what the nation wants to exemplify.   We promise that she’s even better live so if you can make it to a show in her mini Canadian tour (dates and locations can be found on her website) then we highly recommend it.  She also teases us with some promises of summer appearances! We hope you love this Canadian Beauty just as must as the rest of Canada!

Alexi Murdoch has a voice like none other.  It captivates you and makes you want to listen to him on repeat for hours on end.  The Rolling Stone labelled him one of the Top Ten Artists to Watch after the release of his debut album in 2006.  He has not marketed either of his albums, but his popularity continues to grow.  He is how he sounds.  No fancy gimmicks, no costumes, no promotions, just him.  That is exactly what we love.  We hope you do too.

Sorry our favourite was late today, but we were busy reading the Sunday Secrets at http://www.postsecret.com/.
Slow Club – Come On Youth
This song just makes us smile.  Its acoustics are so happy and the lyrics are a delight to listen to.  The band Slow Club is made up of a duo from England: Charles Watson (vocals, guitar) and Rebecca Taylor (vocals, guitar, percussion).  These two musicians are most notably known for their use of strange percussion items, such as glass bottles and chairs.  I hope this feel-good track helps your Sunday get a little lazier.

Out of Sweden, JJ is a two member band who came together in early 2009.  They have done covers of some popular songs including "Birthday Sex", but continue to write original songs as well.  This song has a unique sound which we love! It is gentle and soothing and makes you want to curl up with a fuzzy blanket and listen the night away.  We hope you are soothed by its beautiful sound.

Green River Ordinance – Endlessly
This group of five are from Fort Worth, Texas.  With a band name meaning “prohibition of door-to-door soliciting”, it's quite the oxymoron because we know there are fans who would love to have Green River Ordinance at their doors!  Not only is this group attractive and talented, they are also charitable.  They have started their own charity project where you can purchase songs online and 100% of the profits go to one of the five sponsored charity organizations.  You get to pick where you send your donation! This project can be found at http://www.thehopegros.com/ and we encourage you to join us in supporting them.
